Designing your Fields ?

While data structure helps you behind the scenes, an attractive and easy-to-use UI is just as important to those who add and edit content. ACF offers plenty of options for creating a visual layout that meets your needs.

The Accordion and Tab fields are great for displaying related fields together in their own separate space. This keeps the user’s focus on one set of fields at a time, while also providing an intuitive means for navigation. Plus, it helps to keep the WordPress edit screen neat and tidy.

You can also take advantage of field widths to place multiple related fields on the same line. Introduced in ACF version 5, all fields can be set to a fill specific percentage width of the container. Using this technique can help prevent excessive scrolling while also making for a more attractive UI.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that fields should be ordered in the same manner as they will be displayed on the front end. It’s a small thing that helps avoid any confusion when inputting data.

Advanced Custom Fields is a WordPress plugin that helps you edit complicated content in a simple and logical way. If you’re familiar with WordPress but don’t have much experience with ACF, you may be wondering what all the fuss is about.

Think About the Future

It’s always a good idea to consider the future when building out a custom field UI. The needs of a website change over time and the fields you’ve setup initially may need tweaked down the road.

But that’s where the best practices above can serve you well. So, the next time you’re building something awesome with ACF, remember to:

1. Name and label your fields based on their purpose, without getting overly specific.
2. Take advantage of the Group and Repeater fields to structure data in a logical way.
3. Build a UI that is visually intuitive for users.

Simplify your Fields ?

When it comes to choosing which fields to use, a little creative thinking can result in a more efficient use of space and resources. Because, while our first instinct may be to implement lots of separate fields, we can often find ways to accomplish the same goal by using less.

This less is more approach can be shown in our Home Slider example. Let’s imagine the client requires text over each image (title, sub title and excerpt). On first glance, we could set this up by creating three fields – 2 text and 1 text area. While it would certainly work in terms of functionality, it might not be the best solution. This arrangement could be a bit visually awkward, restricts the customization of content and doesn’t necessarily provide the most intuitive interface for users.

Taking that into consideration, we might choose instead to combine these fields into a single WYSIWYG field. ACF allows us to hide the Visual/Text tabs and turn off media uploads – so we won’t have to worry about our client going too far with things . Using the Default Value field setting, we can also place sample content into the field so that all our client has to do is replace it. The result is something that makes more visual sense for users while still providing the functionality we need.

If you are already familiar with the above function, object and filter you may skip this section.

The WP_Query object is used to query posts and will return an object containing an array of $post objects and many useful methods.

The get_posts function makes use of the above WP_Query object, however, it only returns an array of $post objects making it a simpler way to find and loop over posts.

The pre_get_post filter is called after the query object is created, but before the actual query is run.

Yes, updates are free. Whether you’re using the free version or ACF PRO, you can keep your plugin up to date at no extra cost.

ACF can be updated either via one-click update or manually. When an update becomes available, you will receive a notification on your Plugins page.

To apply the update via one-click update, simply click ‘update now’ in the notification on the Plugins page.

To update manually, you can download the new version of the plugin from the WordPress plugin repository. You can then safely delete the plugin directory on your server, and upload the new version via FTP.

If you’ve upgraded from version 4 to version 5 of ACF and you can’t see you fields, first of all, don’t panic! Version 5 uses a different data structure so they might not be visible, but your fields and their values are still there.

You should see a database upgrade prompt at the top of the page on your WordPress dashboard. All you need to do is click the button to run the database upgrade process. Your fields should re-ppear once that process has been completed

For some reason, the database upgrade process may not have triggered as expected when the new version was installed. To make this happen again, please ensure version 5 is activated and follow this procedure:

1. Back up your database.
2. In your wp_options table, please set the acf_version value back to the latest version you had installed ( something like 4.4.11 )
3. Reload the wp-admin dashboard
4. Click the database upgrade button that appears

If you’re still having troubles, please contact support.

In some hosting environments, communication may not be possible between your server and the WordPress update server. If this happens to you , please note any error messages you find, and contact support.

If you’d like to go back to an earlier version of ACF, we’d recommend using this rollback plugin, which is available from the WordPress repository.

Although we’re not associated with this plugin in any way, we have had reports of ACF users employing it successfully.

All the previous version of ACF PRO are available for download from the downloads section of your ACF store account. To start rolling back, you’ll need to login, download and unzip the version you’d like to rollback to.

Then, on your website, you’ll need to deactivate and delete the version you’re currently running on the _Plugins_ page.

Finally, you’ll need to upload the older version to your wp-content/plugins directory. Once the older version of ACF PRO is uploaded, you will need to activate again it by finding it in the list on the _Plugins_ page in your site’s Administration area, and clicking on the ‘Activate’ link.

Если нужно вывести значение произвольного поля в не шаблона термина, то воспользуйтесь следующими вариантами, указывая их вторым аргументом в функциях /:

term_123	term_’ . $term_id	Строка содержит слово term и ID термина. Добавлено в версии 5.5.0.
WP_Term		Объект термина. Его можно получить множеством способов, например функцией get_term().

Например, пусть у нас есть тестовое поле с именем у стандартных рубрик WordPress и надо вывести его значение:
